Odense Odense, the birthplace of the fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), is situated in the middle of Denmark on the island of Funen. With more than 185,000 inhabitants, Odense is Denmark’s third largest city – and also one of the oldest. It was mentioned for the first time in a letter from the German Emperor Otto III dated 988, and thus the city is known to be more than 1,000 years old. However, the name Odense which comes from “Odins Vi” (= Odin’s Shrine) and Odin is the first among the gods from the old Norse mythology, indicates that the history of the city goes much further back than the year 988. The island of Funen is linked to Jutland and thereby to the rest of the Continent by the two Little Belt bridges and to the island of Zealand by Europe’s largest suspension bridge, which was inaugurated on June 14, 1998 by H.M. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. From Zealand (Copenhagen) it is possible to reach Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia by another newly built bridge – Øresundsbroen – which was inaugurated on July 1, 2000. How to get there Odense is easily reached from all other parts of Denmark, wether you come by train or by car, the distances within the country are small. By air: Denmark has several international airports, of which Copenhagen and Billund are the most convenient when travelling to Odense. From the airport of Copenhagen (Kastrup) trains are leaving every half hour for Odense, and from Billund airport there are frequent busses. By train: Odense is serviced by Inter City trains from Copenhagen every half hour and Jutland every hour. The travelling time from Copenhagen Airport is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes, and from Hamburg approximately 5 hours which is the same as from Frederikshavn in Northern Jutland. Railway Journey Planner is available at this webpage: http://www.dsb.dk/english/ By car: Highway E20 goes through Odense, and the travelling time from Copenhagen is approximately 1½ hours and from Hamburg and Frederikshavn approximately 4 hours. Leisure Activities Odense has a large number of exciting museums, sights, and attractions, of which the best known probably is the Hans Christian Andersen Museum with its rare and unique editions of the world-famous writer's fairytales. Of the many other fascinating and exciting museums and cultural institutions we would like to mention the international art centre, Brandts Klæde-fabrik, and the open-air museum The Funen Village. For families with children there is the Zoo with many fascinating animals and the "Tinder-Box", a children's cultural centre where the children are invited into the fairy-tale world of Hans Christian Andersen through story-telling and music. During the summer, outdoor activities give the city an extra dimension. There are open-air concerts, fairytale theatre, riverboat jazz, and off course lots of outdoor cafés and pubs. Shopping can be done in the small streets in the city or in one of the large shopping centres, where you can find everything you need under one roof. For joggers there is a widespread net of paths along the river, which is easily reached from all hotels in the city, and for golfers there are no less than three golf courses. |
